In 2022, two park rangers from the Protected Areas of the Cottian Alps participated in a monitoring conducted in Aosta Valley as part of the international project GLobal Observation Research Initiative in Alpine environments (GLORIA) to measure the interaction between alpine flora and climate change. After a complex process of data reprocessing, the results of the fieldwork conducted under the guidance of ARPA Aosta Valley were published, with contributions from the Department of Life Sciences and Biological Systems (DBIOS) of the University of Turin and the Mont Avic Natural Park.

From April 16 to 23, an important session of scientific fishing for wels catfish took place in the Natural Park of the Avigliana Lakes. The operations were conducted by the staff of the National Research Council – Water Research Institute (CNR – IRSA), Coordinator of the Life Predator Project, in which the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps are partners, to contain the Silurus glanis from the freshwater bodies of southern Europe where it is an invasive alien species.

The Cinque Terre and Stelvio national parks, symbols of the Italian landscape, have long been facing the increase in tourism with innovative strategies to combine the preservation of biodiversity and the management of tourist flows. Invited by the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps, they shared their experiences in a webinar as part of the cross-border cooperation project Alcotra BiodivTourAlps 2021/2027 that took place on February 10.
Both parks monitor tourism to manage "overtourism," trying to distribute visitors over time and space.

An opportunity to present the results of the Alcotra Aclimo and BiodivTourAlps projects, collaborations with universities and research institutes, and the monitoring carried out by park rangers and staff from the Cozie Alps Parks.

Over 25,000 kilometers of transects covered, thousands of presence signs collected on the ground, and hundreds of genetic samples analyzed in the laboratory. These are some of the numbers that tell the impressive monitoring work of the wolf performed in Piedmont over the past two years. The results are gathered in the new report The Wolf in Piedmont 2023-2025, created within the framework of the European project LIFE WolfAlps EU and the subsequent activities of the AfterLIFE Plan, which provides an updated picture of the population status and the monitoring activities carried out over the past two years.

The new scientific report "The Wolf Population in the Italian Alpine Regions 2023–2024" has been published, carried out as part of the European project LIFE WolfAlps EU. The study updates the picture of the distribution and population size of the wolf along the Italian alpine arch, providing data that are fully comparable to those from the previous national monitoring conducted in 2020–2021.

In the course of 2025, the activity of the Life Predator project in the Avigliana Lakes Natural Park has entered the heart of the captures after the study phase conducted in previous years by project partners coordinated by IRSA CNR with the staff of the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps and the appointed professionals. With the end of the calendar year and taking advantage of the winter break in the extraction operations, it is possible to draft an initial balance on the actual reduction of the biomass of Silurus glanis from the two Avigliana Lakes. The actions have been carried out within the European Life Predator project, of which the Park Authority is a partner, for the containment of the catfish, an invasive alien species, in the freshwater basins of southern Europe.

Thursday, January 8, 2026. Meteorologists state that the cold wave – likely one of the most severe in over 10 years – has reached its peak, recording overnight minimum temperatures of -9 °C in Avigliana and -8 °C in Trana, according to measurements by Arpa Piemonte. Yet, there is still little ice visible on the surface of the Avigliana Lakes. Chronicles speak of times when the Small Lake was crossed by carts or when it was traversed aboard a Fiat Topolino in 1966, while more recent history tells us that the last significant freezing events date back to the winters of 2006 and 2012.

Il Ministro ha voluto portare il proprio saluto al nuovo presidente e al rinnovato consiglio dell’Ente Parco, nonché simbolicamente a tutta la rete degli Enti di gestione delle Aree Protette piemontesi. Le Aree Protette delle Alpi Cozie rappresentano una solida realtà nella tutela del patrimonio ecologico e delle attività umane nei territori delle valli Chisone, Sangone e Susa e del Piemonte in generale. In un contesto che rischia di condannare la montagna a una sempre più marcata marginalizzazione economica e sociale, gli Enti Parco si ripropongono come un laboratorio di sostenibilità. On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the Biodiversity and Natural Areas Sector of the Piedmont Region announced the approval for funding of two projects submitted by the management body of the protected areas of the Cozie Alps under the FESR 2021/2027 call. These are two important "Hydrogeological stabilization interventions for situations of instability in mountainous, hilly, and riparian areas, also aimed at the resilience of the territories," as stated in the text of the call, to which the Park Authority participated in collaboration with the municipalities of Avigliana and Bussoleno, achieving eligibility for the funding of 100% of the works.

Il cielo stellato rappresenta una risorsa naturale, culturale e turistica sempre più rara e, di conseguenza, sempre più preziosa. Per questo motivo il GAL Escartons e Valli Valdesi, in collaborazione con l’Ente di gestione delle Aree Protette delle Alpi Cozie, nell’ambito del progetto Interreg Central Europe DarkerSly4CE promuove un percorso formativo gratuito rivolto alle guide interessate ad acquisire competenze specifiche nell’ambito dell’astroturismo.

Three species of small mustelids – the stoat (Mustela erminea), the weasel (Mustela nivalis), and the European polecat (Mustela putorius) – coexist in the varied landscape of North-Western Italy, but they remain largely elusive and poorly known. A recent study conducted by a group of Italian researchers, including Luca Maurino from the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps, used ecological niche models (ENM) and a wide network of sightings to map the probability of presence of these species and compare their environmental requirements on a regional scale. The results, published on November 22nd in the scientific journal "Mammal Research", provide useful insights for guiding targeted conservation actions and focusing on emerging threats.

The Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps have created a video to tell the story of the involvement of amateur fishermen in containing the catfish from the waters of the Natural Park of the Avigliana Lakes. This is an initiative organized in 2025 by the park authority staff as part of the European Life Predator project to combat the spread of Silurus glanis, an invasive alien aquatic predator that threatens to compromise the aquatic biodiversity of water bodies in southern Europe.

With the appointment decree of the President of the Regional Council dated November 27, 2025, Elio Pulzoni has been appointed President of the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps. Da sabato 1 novembre è attivo il divieto di circolazione per il periodo invernale sulle strade provinciali del Colle delle Finestre (SP172) e del Colle dell'Assietta (SP173). Salvo imprevisti legati ad interventi di manutenzione in primavera, la riapertura integrale della strada del Colle delle Finestre è prevista per il 16 giugno 2026, mentre bisognerà attendere il 1 luglio 2026 per poter percorrere per intero la strada dell'Assietta.

In the course of 2025, the park rangers of the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps increased daytime and nighttime monitoring activities regarding fishing in the Natural Park of the Avigliana Lakes, issuing sanctions and carrying out seizures of prohibited equipment. However, beyond the repressive nature of the work carried out, the goal remains the prevention of illegal behaviors to protect those who respect laws and regulations and, above all, to defend a common heritage that belongs to everyone: the environment.

On October 16 and 17, a meeting took place at the headquarters in Salbertrand of the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps among the partners of the ALCOTRA ACLIMO project, the cross-border initiative Italy-France dedicated to water resource management in times of climate crisis. On Monday, October 29, 2025, professional fishing activities began for the containment of the catfish in the Avigliana Lakes Natural Park. The initiative is one of the actions of the Life Predator project, of which the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps are partners, aimed at containing the Silurus glanis, the aquatic predator that represents an invasive alien species in the freshwater basins of Southern Europe.

On the late afternoon of Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the park rangers of the Management Authority of the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps, in constant contact with the Director, intervened in Val Chisone, at a pasture in Pian dell’Alpe (municipality of Usseaux), following a report from a farmer who stated that he had been injured by a wolf while trying to prevent the predation of one of his sheep. Below is the reconstruction of the facts and the commitment of the Authority.

It is not just a chromatic issue related to the color of a butterfly's wings, but the solution to a small mystery regarding its eating habits. As we know, concerning food, lepidopterans are very selective because they mainly feed on very specific plant species, especially in the larval stage. In the case of Anthocharis euphenoides, also known as the Provence aurora, the species considered to be its preferred food source may not be the one that has been believed until now.

Even during the summer of 2025, monitoring activities are underway to measure the impacts of tourist attendance on mountain flora and fauna. After an initial experimental phase conducted in 2024, the work continues within the Interreg BiodivTour Alps Project along Provincial Road 173 of the Assietta, where intense human presence occurs in a fragile high-altitude environment during the summer.

The Orrido di Foresto Natural Reserve with its Via Ferrata, in the Municipality of Bussoleno, has significant tourist potential and, at the same time, an equally important responsibility. With the aim of a more conscious visitation of the Reserve and its Ferrata, the project “Towards the Top – Inclusive Mountain” has indeed begun to take its first steps this summer.

Questa volta senza la divisa di guardiaparco, ma in veste di inanellatore autorizzato dall’Istituto per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA) per un’attività di monitoraggio dell’avifauna.

For this reason, institutions and scientific authorities are conducting studies and developing tools to protect animals and raise awareness among breeders and consumers. Grazing herbivores such as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses can encounter a series of even fatal pathologies simply by feeding on grass, or rather on weeds, which are harmful species that contain pharmacologically active substances.

The American pond turtles present in the Grande Lake of Avigliana are carriers of infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans. This is what emerges from a scientific study conducted by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria, and Aosta Valley in the Natural Park of the Avigliana Lakes. It has been found that 13.3% of individuals were infected with salmonellosis and/or cryptosporidium.

From Wednesday, June 4 to Friday, June 6, 2025, the Protected Areas of the Cottian Alps participated in the monitoring visit of the Life Predator project, which took place in Portugal along the Tagus River basin. As expected in this type of program, the event was characterized as a technical and practical meeting halfway through the project between the project partners and the body designated by the European Union to oversee the progress of the work.

The mountainous areas are among the most valuable and fragile biodiversity hotspots globally, hosting unique species adapted to harsh climatic conditions and extreme environments. However, a recent study conducted along an altitude gradient in the Western Alps highlights how protected areas, while essential for the conservation of mountain fauna, are facing increasing pressures related to climate change and land use changes, which have repercussions on mountain biodiversity.

On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the Giro d'Italia will pass through the Orsiera Rocciavré Natural Park, crossing the Colle delle Finestre with an ascent from the Val di Susa side and a descent on the Val Chisone side. It will be a beautiful day of sport and celebration, especially since the stage is expected to be one of the most interesting and competitive, featuring the ascent to Cima Coppi, the highest point of the event at Colle delle Finestre with its elevation of 2176 m, moreover after 8 km of dirt road.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, work began on the restoration of the landslides on the Selleries road, where the refuge and pasture are located, in the Val Chisone. This is a project that was initiated even before the significant damage recorded during the summer of 2024, whereby the Management Authority of the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps is the beneficiary of a FESR funding of €385,500 for a project shared with the Municipalities of Fenestrelle and Roure.

The renovation of the road between Colle delle Finestre and Colle della Vecchia, Val Chisone, is in the starting phase. After the assignment and procurement of the works, a first operational meeting has already taken place between the involved entities and the contracted company, where the start of the construction site was set for the first days of June.

On the occasion of the World Biodiversity Day, established by the United Nations in 2000, celebrated every year on May 22, we publish the results of a monitoring activity carried out by the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps in the Avigliana Lakes Natural Park on the Emys orbicularis, the rare European marsh turtle, of which about thirty specimens survive and are at risk of extinction. A small example of biodiversity that is at risk of being lost forever.

An important renovation work has been completed at the Charterhouse of Montebenedetto, in the municipality of Villarfocchiardo (TO), with extraordinary maintenance of the roof of the rural building adjacent to the church, within the monumental complex. The Carthusian abbey, founded in 1198, is managed by the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps by the Piedmont Region, which has allocated €80,000 by the end of 2024 for extraordinary maintenance interventions and for the preservation of the heritage.

At the end of March 2025, an interesting scientific article on the seasonal migratory habits of the ibex in relation to climate change was published in the Journal of Animal Ecology. It is the result of a study at the alpine level that combines a large amount of data regarding the movements of 406 radio-collared ungulates with the climatic conditions of their habitats to analyze how the seasonal variations in snow coverage, peaks of growth and vegetation senescence, and average temperatures affect the strategies and timings with which ibex move from wintering sites to the slopes where they spend the summer season, and vice versa.

Since April 1st, the Parks of the Cozie Alps can rely on a new Anti-Poison Dog Unit (UCA) in operation. The duo formed by park ranger Lorenzo Brino and his Australian shepherd Maya has passed the final exam, the security test that certifies the dog’s ability to intervene independently in poison search activities.

Among the protected species within protected areas, one must not forget homo sapiens. This column, which usually discusses the limitations imposed on human activities to preserve the environment, takes a diversion dedicated to an obligation introduced for safety reasons in avalanche danger situations: that of carrying an Artva, shovel, and probe on snowy terrain throughout the Italian mountainous territory, not just in the parks.

On Saturday, December 3, 2024, an interesting report was broadcasted on Geo about the Orsiera Rocciavré Natural Park. The popular RAI program dedicated to the environment and its wonders narrated the story of a herb - thyme - and its multiple culinary and medicinal properties with its usual expertise, spiced up with spectacular shots inside the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps. A real source of pride for a Park Authority that is responsible for safeguarding and enhancing the natural heritage of its territories.

Winter is the most challenging season for many species living in the mountains. Winter hiking and ski mountaineering activities can disrupt - sometimes threaten - the delicate ecological balance of an environment already strained by natural elements.

Located in western Piedmont on the border with France, the Chisone, Germanasca, and Pellice valleys are studied in this volume from the perspective of communication routes and the mobility of people, goods, and ideas.

They do not hunt in the parks.

In Piedmont, Regional Law no. 19/2009, article 8 states that "In protected areas established and classified as a natural park and nature reserve, the following prohibitions apply: a) hunting activities; b) introduction and use of weapons, explosives, and any destructive or capture means by individuals, unless nominatively authorized."

The best weapon against livestock poisonings comes from the precise knowledge of plants and early detection. A project involving ASL TO3, Ipla, the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria, and Valle d'Aosta, and the Parco Alpi Cozie with the aim of developing a new diagnostic test methodology to identify toxic plants.

Reasons for a prohibition

In Piedmont, mushroom picking is regulated by Regional Law no. 24/2007, which, in summary, allows harvesting from dawn to dusk of a daily individual quantity not exceeding 3 kg for all those who are equipped with the appropriate permit. Geographical limitations apply within protected areas established in accordance with the current regional regulations and sites that are part of the Natura 2000 network identified by the respective managing bodies.

In the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps, as in the entire Piedmont region, circulation with motor vehicles on off-road routes is forbidden according to Regional Law No. 32/1982. The ban, as stated, "also applies to mountain paths and mule tracks, as well as forest tracks and roads." This is Article 11 inserted, not by chance, in the text entitled "Rules for the conservation of the natural heritage and environmental structure" because undoubtedly vehicular traffic has an impact on ecological balances. But what is meant by "off-road routes"? Essentially, everything that is not part of the state, regional, provincial, or municipal road network.

Throughout the summer, park rangers have intervened on several occasions to warn mountain bikers who were riding on routes and trails within the Alpi Cozie Parks that are prohibited to bicycles. Some individuals justified their actions by claiming they had followed directions downloaded from certain websites or apps, but unfortunately, the regulations of a protected area do not allow ignorance of the rules. We take this opportunity, therefore, to reiterate the restrictions in place in the Protected Areas of the Alpi Cozie and explain the reasons behind them.
 

The end of summer is approaching, and with it comes the mushroom picking season that attracts many enthusiasts every year.

In the Protected Areas of the Cozie Alps and in the sites of the Natura 2000 network managed by the Park Authority, mushroom picking is regulated by National Law 352/1993 and Regional Law 24/2007, i.e., it is allowed for all holders of a permit, except for the following specific limitations:

Spending a day outdoors with your dog is certainly a beautiful experience. In all Italian national and regional parks, there are limitations aimed at finding a compromise between the needs of environmental conservation and those of dog owners who wish to bring their four-legged friends along. Let's see why.

These migratory birds are threatened with extinction and an international reintroduction project teaches young specimens the essential migration routes with the help of human adoptive parents flying on motorized hang gliders.

Within protected areas, certain human activities must adhere to environmental protection principles. Among these is the use of drones, which is permitted only for professional, monitoring, and scientific research purposes. The use of remotely piloted aircraft for these purposes in natural parks, nature reserves, and Natura 2000 sites managed by the Cozie Alps Protected Areas is subject to a specific request and impact assessment.

In the Parks of the Cozie Alps, it is not allowed to capture, kill or harm any animal, not even the smallest or unknown ones. The project for biological control of mosquitoes is implemented with the aim of containing the number of Culicid individuals (mosquitoes) in the territory. It is based on a specific law of the Piedmont Region, L.R. 75/95, which has established that 50% of the funding is borne by the Municipalities and the other 50% by the Region.

The Conca Cialancia grasshopper, discovered in 1986, is a rare endemic species of the Cottian Alps. It lives only at high altitudes, above 2000 meters, in meadows on sunny slopes. It has bright colors: gray-blue and red in males, camouflaged in females. The stridulating song of the males attracts the females. A truly special insect!

The Swiss pine is the only native pine with needles grouped in bundles of 5 and produces cylindrical cones, purple in color, containing seeds wrapped in a hard shell (pine nuts)

Larch (Larix decidua) is a hardy conifer with deciduous needles that thrives in harsh alpine climates. It grows on poor soils and pioneers the way for more complex forests.

The Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is a conifer that shows a high ability to adapt to the environment: it lives from the valley floor up to 2000 meters above sea level.

In the territories where today the Parks of the Cottian Alps are located, and in general throughout the entire Alpine arc, the wolf became extinct between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century due to human hunting activity. Starting from the 1970s, from a small nucleus of wolves of the subspecies Canis lupus italicus present in the Apennines of Central Italy (between 100 and 200 individuals), a process of numerical growth and spontaneous recolonization began, leading the species to spread throughout the entire peninsula.

The Apollo butterfly is a large diurnal butterfly with a wingspan that can exceed 5 cm. The wings are mainly white with black spots in the front area, while the hind wings have two or more red spots bordered in black with a white pupil.

The black grouse, also commonly known as the capercaillie (Lyrurus tetrix), is one of the species that make up the typical alpine fauna. The adult male has black plumage with metallic blue highlights, white-edged wings, a deeply forked "lyre-shaped" tail, and red wattles above the eyes, which become particularly prominent in spring. The female, smaller and with brown-mimetic plumage, blends in with the surrounding environment and is less conspicuous.

It is a perennial herbaceous plant 20-40 cm tall. It has an underground stem and a leafless one that emerges from the ground. The leaves are heart-shaped with lobes and denticles. The flowers are hermaphroditic and grouped in an umbel. The fruit is a capsule with 30-40 seeds.

La scarpetta di Venere è una delle orchidee più affascinanti e riconoscibili della flora europea. Il suo grande fiore giallo dorato, rappresentato dall’elemento centrale definito “labello” e racchiuso in sepali e petali bruno-violacei, ricorda una piccola scarpa, da cui deriva il nome. È una pianta erbacea perenne appartenente alla famiglia delle Orchidaceae, alta fino a 40–60 cm, che fiorisce tra maggio e giugno. La sua fioritura vistosa ne provoca una raccolta eccessiva che, unita alla diminuzione dei suoi habitat a causa della crisi climatica, la rende una specie sempre più vulnerabile. 

The ermine (Mustela erminea) is an agile and sprightly mustelid, widespread across much of Eurasia and North America. It is also found in the Alps, where it prefers open mountainous environments rich in natural burrows, pastures, high-altitude meadows, and areas with scattered bushes. It is a small-sized carnivore: the body measures between 17 and 33 centimeters, the tail between 5 and 12 centimeters, with a weight that varies from 100 to 450 grams. Males are significantly larger than females.

The Eurasian eagle-owl is the largest nocturnal bird of prey in Europe and one of the most majestic birds in our mountains. Its wingspan can reach and exceed 180 centimeters, while its weight typically ranges from 2 to 3.5 kilograms, with females being sturdier than males. It is unmistakable for its large bright orange eyes and the tufts of feathers on its head, which resemble ears and are raised particularly when it is alert.

The river prawn (Austropotamobius pallipes complex) is one of the most discreet and valuable inhabitants of our waterways. Brown-olive in color, with the underside of the claws lighter, hence the Latin name pallipes ("light feet"), it has a distinctive appearance: a robust, segmented body, two large front claws, and an abdomen that ends with a wide caudal fan, which allows for rapid backward movements in case of escape. Adults typically reach a length of 8–12 centimeters and move carefully along the gravelly and rocky bottoms of streams.

Maestosa e inconfondibile, l’aquila reale è il più grande rapace presente stabilmente sulle Alpi e uno dei simboli più evocativi degli ambienti montani. Diffusa in gran parte dell’emisfero settentrionale, in Italia trova il suo principale areale lungo tutta la catena alpina. 

The European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a deciduous broadleaf tree that can reach considerable sizes; its bark is grey, smooth, and compact; the leaves are elliptical, with a crenate margin and a characteristic shiny appearance.

Genepì is a small plant that grows on scree and rocky areas at altitudes above 2300 meters, but it is also cultivated in the mountains on suitable terrains and positions, for the production of herbal teas and liquors.

Simbolo per eccellenza dell’alta montagna europea, la stella alpina è una delle piante più iconiche delle Alpi, capace di evocare ambienti severi, panorami aperti e condizioni climatiche estreme. Il suo aspetto inconfondibile, con infiorescenze bianco-argentee dalla tipica forma stellata, è il risultato di adattamenti evolutivi raffinati che le consentono di vivere in alta quota, spesso al limite superiore della vegetazione.

In the Park, in the coniferous forests, there are large nests of red wood ants of the Formica rufa group, useful for biological control. There are 4 similar species with complex social lives. The workers perform various tasks, the queens lay eggs, and the males mate with the queens during the nuptial flight. The nests can be large and accommodate up to 1 million ants.

The marmot is a diurnal rodent that lives in alpine meadows. It feeds on plants and insects, digs complex burrows, and hibernates from October to April. The young are born after 30-35 days of gestation and remain in the burrow for 40 days. The main predators are the golden eagle and terrestrial carnivores.

The ibex is a large wild goat. Very confident with humans, it inhabits the entire Alpine arc.

The rock partridge (Lagopus muta) is an alpine bird the size of a pigeon that lives at high altitudes, above trees and shrubs. Up there, at the border between high-altitude meadows and rocky areas, generally between 1800 and 2700 meters, going up beyond 3000 meters in summer and autumn.

Green alder (Alnus viridis) forms dense thickets (alder groves) in the water catchment areas and on the slopes where the water table is shallow and the soil is very moist, often with water seepage and surface runoff.

Wild narcissus dots alpine meadows with its tufts of highly fragrant flowers featuring white petals and yellow corona.

For years a population of rock sparrow has been nesting in the mowed and grazed meadows of the upper Susa Valley, in two Sites of the Natura 2000 network managed by the Parks of the Cottian Alps. It has colonized an area of ​​about 13 square kilometers on the south-southwest slope in the municipalities of Sestriere and Cesana Torinese, between 1350 and 2000 meters above sea level. The territory is characterized by xeric pastures and mountain meadows that in recent decades have seen a drastic decrease in traditional agro-pastoral practices, with the consequent risk of invasion by shrubs and trees and loss of the high degree of plant and animal biodiversity linked to mowed and grazed meadows.

It can reach 2.90 m wingspan and weigh 7 kg. These characteristics make it the largest bird in the Alpine region. Moreover, it is the only species among vultures capable of feeding on bones thanks to some morphological and behavioral adaptations. Its body structure places it in an intermediate position between a raptor and a vulture, after all, its name derives from the Greek terms gyps (vulture) and aetos (eagle).

The chamois frequents high-altitude meadows, but can also be observed on rocky walls and within woods, ranging from the valley floor up to about 3500 meters in altitude.

l Carabus cychroides is an endemic beetle found in a few very limited areas of the Cozie Alps, mostly within our protected areas.
It is an insect that is strongly threatened by climate change. It lives in cavities in high-altitude pastures and in moraine areas facing north, where the snow remains longer.

Chorthippus (Glyptobothrus) pullus (Philippi, 1830) is a rare insect belonging to the order Orthoptera, heavily threatened with extinction in Italy and Europe due to the destruction of natural habitats, consisting of wide riverbeds characterized by flow dynamics that are not altered by humans.

Quali sono i cambiamenti sul territorio del Gran Bosco di Salbertrand dopo quasi trent'anni di protezione? Come stanno gli animali del Parco? Chi sono?
Gli autori entrano nei particolari della gestione faunistica del cervo reintrodotto vent'anni prima dell'istituzione del Parco. Il ripopolamento è stato un successo e i bramiti rimbalzano tra le creste nella stagione degli amori.
Nel momento del libro era accertato che i lupi erano tornati sulle piste del Gran Bosco e gli interrogativi su cosa avrebbero portato erano densi di aspettativa.
Soggetti e forze in campo cambiano con il tempo, il Gran Bosco risponde.

Cahier ecomuseo n.17 - Il lavoro del mondo contadino nella prima metà del Novecento visto attraverso gli occhi dei bambini di allora.

Il cahier presenta la società contadina, il suo ambiente e i mestieri tradizionali visti dagli occhi di alcuni bambini vissuti nella prima metà del Novecento e trascritti nei loro quaderni di scuola.

L'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean ha raccolto, nella sezione dedicata alla Scuola di un tempo, grazie ad acquisizioni, prestiti e donazioni di privati, un'importante collezione di quaderni di scuola di bambini provenienti da vari paesi dell'alta Valle, scritti tra la fine dell'Ottocento e gli Anni Quaranta del Novecento.

Attraverso una selezione di temi, componimenti e disegni tratti dai quaderni di inizio secolo, si è voluto cercare di restituire ai bambini di oggi il paesaggio, naturale e sociale, vissuto dai loro nonni, quando anch'essi erano fanciulli, all'interno di una società contadina di cui non rimangono che i ricordi.

Una collezione di cartoline d'epoca e una collezione di scritti d'epoca si arricchiscono a vicenda raccontando il territorio di Usseaux, Pragelato e Sestriere. L'unicità dei luoghi rappresentati svela grazie a notizie d'archivio, leggende e testimonianze.

Profilo della biologia degli ungulati alpini autoctoni cominciando dalla storia naturale di ognuno di loro, dandone una descrizione morfologica ed etologica e indicando i principi di conservazione di ogni specie.
Il materiale delle lezioni del corso di 'Biologia e conservazione degli ungulati presenti nell'arco alpino occidentale' del 1987 riordinato e arricchito dalle pagine sullo stambecco diventa uno strumento di divulgazione per non addetti ai lavori con il pregio di mettere a disposizione la competenza di studiosi che hanno dedicato la vita allo studio di questi animali.

Storie di cervi e uomini di tutti i tempi in cui la natura diventa luogo immaginario e il cervo una creatura mitica capace di trasmettere il senso delle cose del mondo. Il confine tra il mito e lo sguardo di un guardaparco che i cervi li incontra quotidianamente nel suo lavoro lasciano lo spazio per la curiosità di incontrare davvero questo animale e scoprire cosa avrà da dirci personalmente.

Oreste Rey descrive le tecniche tradizionali dalla coltivazione al filo di canapa sulla sua esperienza, comune in molte famiglie come attività secondaria ai lavori di campagna. La tessitura era attività di professionisti per le attrezzature specializzate e ingombranti che richiedeva. Bruno Tessa ha contribuito alla descrizione di questa tecnica in cui si è specializzato con passione e perizia rari.

The 1992 calendar is dedicated to six itineraries that wind through the valleys of the Orsiera-Rocciavré Park.

L'epoca è quella in cui il progresso delle città e lo spopolamento delle aree alpine sembrano cambiare il mondo. Lo sguardo è quello di un grande larice su battaglie e invenzioni degli umani passati sotto le sue chiome e sulle vicende degli abitanti della foresta che si inseguono o trovano riparo e nutrimento tra i suoi rami. La memoria diventa ingrediente del futuro.

Con lo spostamento del confine sulla linea spartiacque cambia il modo di combattere sulla frontiera: le montagne che erano il luogo dove deteriorare e rallentare le forze di invasione diventano una linea immaginata sulla carta e segnata sul territorio reale che non deve essere oltrepassata a nessun costo. 
Storie di piedi gelati, maestranze capaci di costruire in condizioni proibitive, spie catturate e cavalli che precipitano nei burroni sono la conseguenza di decreti e manovre raccolti nella prima parte del libro con un criterio cronologico dall'ideazione allo smantellamento. La seconda parte è la ricerca dei segni lasciati sul territorio dalle singole opere approfondite singolarmente.

Generazioni di avi nati e vissuti in una frazione isolata di montagna hanno mantenuto un legame con lo scorrere delle stagioni e le forme del territorio in una microstoria fatta di parentele e scandita da riti. Vengono scosse dalla storia quando diventa così ingombrante da intaccare gli equilibri più distanti.
L'autore, figlio di emigranti in Francia e affezionato alle sue origini racconta i risultati delle ricerche intorno al suo albero genealogico per nove generazioni. La storia di una famiglia diventa così una scusa per raccontare la vita quotidiana di un posto particolare che è la frazione di Troncea alle sorgenti del Chisone, dove gli abitanti apparentemente isolati parlavano correntemente e scrivevano fino a quattro lingue. La cicatrice della valanga del Beth, le vicende dei valdesi e la grande storia si intrecciano alla vita di persone con un nome, un cognome e addirittura un volto, seminando un senso delle radici e proponendo un modo di guardare al futuro.

Rane e rospi, pipistrelli e ricci descritti a partire dalla biologia per sfatare un immaginario ostile che li ha descritti per secoli come creature malefiche.
La descrizione puntuale delle specie e la raccolta di storie e poesie in coda al libro danno volume ai rappresentanti di un piccolo popolo che si muove in mezzo a noi spesso disturbato, senza disturbare.

Manuale del boscaiolo delle Alpi occidentali con illustrazione e descrizione di strumenti, tecniche di abbattimento e trasporto. Lo sguardo attento di Oreste Rey rende protagonisti di questa professione il bosco e i suoi abitanti al variare delle stagioni. Dà le istruzioni per imparare un mestiere ed esprime il fascino del bosco.

L'opuscolo racconta la località della Mortera le cui vicende sono vincolate al convento di San Francesco e alla strada dei Principi, attraverso la ricerca di archivio che ne descrive la storia, i significati dei toponimi da cui traspaiono notizie e leggende mischiate nella memoria con lo stesso peso e con cartoline e foto d'epoca che fanno immaginare lo stesso luogo animato da altri modi di vivere.
La descrizione senza parole del percorso del Sentiero dei Principi con le fotografie di Valentina Mangini, guardiaparco dei Laghi di Avigliana, dà un esempio del metodo full immersion descritto da Gianfranco Salotti in introduzione per invitare chi frequenta questo posto da tempo o per la prima volta a comprenderlo.

Il Cahier n.29 dell'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean "Trabaoujâ, il suono della festa nella tradizione chiomontina" è stato scritto da Silvia Bellet e Daniela Ordazzo dell'Associazione Eigo y cuento di Chiomonte grazie alla collaborazione di tante persone che hanno fornito ricordi, documenti e immagini.

Il titolo,Trabaoujâ, significa suonare le campane a festa, perchè un tempo le campane segnavano la vita quotidiana dei chiomontini, e quando suonavano a festa tutti partecipavano riconoscendosi membri della Comunità.

Il cahier è dedicato alle antiche feste del calendario tradizionale chiomontino che scandivano i dodici mesi dell'anno, le feste invernali, Capodanno, Epifania, Sant'Antonio a la Ramat con il Sharintel, la Festa patronale di San Sebastiano con la pouento, il Carnevale, le feste estive presso le varie cappelle di montagna dalla Cappella Bianca alla Madonna della Neve dell'Arguel, quelle della primavera e dell'autunno...

Conoscere le valanghe avvenute in un territorio e i loro effetti nella storia è un modo per prevederne le conseguenze in futuro e proteggere vite e beni. Andrea Rostagno descrive le fonti storiche disponibili per la val Troncea illustrate da una scelta sintetica di foto d'archivio in centro al libro.
L'appendice delle attività di informazione e prevenzione sul pericolo valanghe è a cura dell'ARPA Piemonte ed è uno strumento utile per informarsi in vista di escursioni e visite nel Parco nella stagione in cui il manto nevoso è instabile.

Questa pubblicazione è il catalogo della mostra omonima, in cui erano esposti gli originali delle carte riprodotte. E' diviso in due parti: i capitoli di descrizione di tecniche, ragioni e chiavi di lettura delle carte permettono di comprendere la descrizione dello spazio come rappresentazione di un'epoca; le schede delle carte esposte mettono in chiaro gli aspetti illustrati nei capitoli, mostrando l'evoluzione dello sguardo dei committenti sullo stesso territorio.

Inquinamento organico ed eutrofizzazione delle acque favoriscono lo sviluppo di grandi quantità di zanzare. Il conflitto tra l'istituzione del Parco dei Laghi di Avigliana, le conseguenze negative dell'uso di insetticidi sull'ambiente e la necessità di controllare l'infestazione di zanzare ha trovato una chiave di volta nella lotta biologica alle popolazioni di insetti.
Questo opuscolo introduce le definizioni di ecologia di comunità ed equilibrio naturale, descrive i principi generali della lotta agli insetti tramite insetticidi e spiega le ipotesi per ottenere un controllo accettabile degli stessi tramite i loro parassiti, i loro predatori o altri metodi.

Un importante lavoro di ricerca e salvaguardia toponomastica dell'Alta Valle Dora che permette di completare il censimento dei toponimi del vecchio comune di Oulx, entro i suoi limiti censuari precedenti l'accorpamento con gli ex Comuni di Beaulard e Savoulx nel 1928, che va a acompletare un lavoro di anni che ha riguardato un territorio vasto, con un'elevata, antica antropizzazione alpina.

Un saggio sulla lingua d'oc, il patuà e, nel contempo, il racconto di momenti significativi di storia locale e internazionale.

Un quaderno dedicato interamente al Cels di Exilles, nato dalla disponibilità della Professoressa Franca Abbà Blais, depositaria delle preziose registrazioni di numerose fiabe per bambini raccontate in lingua locale dalla mamma Rita, e dalla segnalazione di questo patrimonio etnolinguistico fatta al CeSDoMeO da parte di Enzo Vayr, già Sindaco di Giaglione.
Attorno a questo corpo principale si è andato sviluppando un approfondimento su Cels /ën Séou, sul suo territorio, sulle sue borgate di Rif, Morliere e Ruinas, sulle particolarità del patuà locale e sugli scritti in lingua locale di Genesio De La Coste, pubblicati negli anni Settanta sul bollettino parrocchiale di Exilles, Il Bannie.

l cahier trova origine dall'idea di dedicare il tradizionale convegno annuale realizzato dall'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean in collaborazione con l'Associazione culturale ArTeMuDa, alla tradizione musicale dell'Alta Valle della Dora Riparia.

Si è quindi data alla pubblicazione degli atti del convegno la forma di un nuovo cahier ecomuseale, su cui sono raccolti i vari interventi sulla musica di banda in alta Valle e sulla storia dei complessi bandistici locali, sugli strumenti musicali tradizionali e di riproposta, sulle danze e sui canti occitani locali, sulle filastrocche e canzoni dei bambini e sulla possibilità di utilizzarli per nuove proposte didattiche.

Al cahier è allegato un CD contenente una raccolta inedita di musiche e canti della tradizione occitana, registrato per l'occasione da: Banda Musicale Alta Valle Susa, Trobairitz d'Oc, Parenaperde, Daniele Contardo con gli attori del Laboratorio Permanente di Ricerca Teatrale di Salbertrand.

Libro di giochi e storie per offrire ai bambini (e non solo) le istruzioni per l'uso del Parco della Val Troncea, dove la natura e la montagna non sono la scenografia ma i protagonisti, come raccontano le antiche leggende e si può scoprire grazie ai giochi proposti dal libro.

Un erbario di 35 piante con cui le persone dell'Alta Valle si sono curate per secoli. 
La scelta è stata condotta tramite interviste dirette e indirette a guaritori che conoscevano specie, momento della raccolta e ricette, con questionari nelle scuole elementari per scoprire contatti più difficili da trovare. Le indicazioni ottenute con le interviste sono state confrontate con testi di medicina ottocenteschi che hanno permesso di verificare quanto l'uso di queste piante fosse tramandato in modo preciso nella tradizione.

Oreste Rey racconta l'evoluzione del mercato del ghiaccio dall'epoca in cui veniva raccolto dal ghiacciaio Galambra alla diffusione dei frigoriferi. Tra i due momenti c'è stato l'investimento della costruzione della ghiacciaia di Salbertrand e del lago artificiale a monte della stessa per produrlo, raccoglierlo e stoccarlo.

Il cahier è dedicato al territorio di Desertes, comune autonomo fino al 1928 e successivamente aggregato a Cesana. Il villaggio si trova in posizione defilata in un vallone laterale dell'Alta Valle della Dora Riparia, poco noto ai più e da molti dimenticato, pur essendo stato frequentato fin dall'antichità sfruttando i percorsi a mezza costa che si muovono lungo la valle e attraverso il Colle di Desertes.
La pubblicazione è frutto della ricerca toponomastica condotta da Renato Sibille e Rinaldo Gros, a cui si sono aggiunti i contributi di Alberto Dotta Direttore del Consorzio Forestale Alta Valle Susa, per la descrizione introduttiva dell'ambiente naturale, Andrea Zonato dell'Archivio Storico Diocesano di Susa, per la ricostruzione della storia della parrocchia e degli edifici religiosi di Desertes e Roberto Guasco per le notizie e le immagini sulle persistenze militari sul territorio, in particolare negli anni a ridosso della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Il percorso di lettura del territorio si snoda attraverso un ritratto della Comunità tracciato con l'aiuto di documenti d'archivio e con i toponimi recuperati con interviste e sopralluoghi, grazie all'aiuto e alla testimonianza di chi vive o ha vissuto parte della sua esistenza nei luoghi oggetto della ricerca.

Boschi, foreste e selve a uno sguardo distratto sembrano ambienti naturali. Questo libro, frutto delle osservazioni del guardiaparco Bruno Usseglio sul territorio e negli archivi, traduce come frutto dell'interazione tra la natura, l'uomo e la sua storia il paesaggio boscato dei versanti della val Chisone.
Il bosco è ombra per gli animali al pascolo, legna da ardere per scaldarsi, cuocere il pane o preparare la calce, materiale da costruzione o da falegnameria. La costruzione delle fortificazioni e il loro mantenimento ha avuto un impatto significativo sulla composizione dei boschi della valle. 
Il periodo esplorato da questa ricerca è stato un tempo buio per le foreste. Prima che l'industrializzazione spopolasse le montagne ogni fazzoletto di terra in piano era coltivato per sostenere economie di sussistenza. Indagare sulla gestione di questa risorsa con i giochi di potere legati a un bene necessario e ridotto ai minimi termini mette in luce la capacità di uomini illuminati di cercare un equilibrio tra uomo e natura e di altri di abusarne per profitto.

Maestre e maestri, aule affollate di allievi che le raggiungono per sentieri e mulattiere con un pezzo di legna per la stufa e inchiostro e calamaio nella cartella, pagelle, materiali e metodi educativi, punizioni e premi, foto di classe e campanelle dell'intervallo in testimonianze e documenti raccolti nelle scuole delle frazioni quando la montagna era ancora popolata.

Libro illustrato con acquerelli sul campo che descrivono il Parco Orsiera Rocciavrè e le Riserve di Chianocco e Foresto attraverso lo sguardo di Elio Giuliano, guardiaparco, osservatore e disegnatore che illustra flora, fauna, architettura e geologia, raccontando le vite che si intrecciano tra i sentieri e le creste del territorio su cui vigila.

Percorsi didattici autoguidati per il riconoscimento degli uccelli nei Parchi Naturali Orsiera-Rocciavrè e Rocca di Cavour.

Strumento semplificato che permette di curiosare sull'avifauna dei due Parchi, ma è valido anche in territori limitrofi con caratteristiche simili e permette di imparare a collegare quello che è riconoscibile con i cinque sensi ad altre informazioni che portano ad escludere o confermare l'identità dell'animale avvistato.

ll Cahier è stato pubblicato a fine 2016 ed è curato da Piero Brizio dell'Associazione Piemontese di Mineralogia e Paleontologia con il contributo di Zeno Vangelista, geologo del CFAVS, per l'elaborazione cartografica. Consiste in una minuziosa ricerca bibliografica che ricostruisce la storia delle miniere, delle cave, degli assaggi e delle ricerche minerarie in Alta Valle di Susa dal XII secolo al Novecento, quando l'antieconomicità dei giacimenti e dei metodi di estrazione ne hanno decretato la fine.

Antiche glaciazioni hanno modellato il paesaggio che ha dato forma ai laghi di Avigliana. Dal ritiro dei ghiacci, la vita si è fatta spazio con la colonizzazione delle sponde e della massa d'acqua da parte di piante ed animali e infine dell'uomo.
Ognuno di questi soggetti ha contribuito all'equilibrio dell'ecosistema in modo che ogni specie ne traesse beneficio. 
L'eccessiva pressione antropica dell'ultimo secolo ha messo in crisi questo equilibrio; per attenuarla è nato il Parco Naturale dei Laghi di Avigliana che è l'ultimo capitolo di questo libro e ha il compito di prendersi cura di ognuno dei suoi personaggi.

Il diario di quattro giornate di Dante Alpe, guardiaparco dell'Orsiera Rocciavrè e le sue foto per raccontare l'incedere delle stagioni sono un esempio da seguire per affinare l'attenzione su quanti e quali incontri possono succedersi in poche ore camminando nel parco.

Questo cahier, scritto a più mani e frutto di un'attenta ricerca d'archivio, descrive ottocento anni di sfruttamento dell'acqua da parte della comunità di Salbertrand: dal 1298 ai giorni nostri, dal mulino idraulico a ruota orizzontale all'azienda elettrica comunale.

"Arcadia Alpina" is a novel written by Cavalier Enrico Faure of Sauze d'Oulx, published in 1906.

The reissue of "Arcadia Alpina" in the Cahier dell'ecomuseo Colombano Romean series is an opportunity to discover a forgotten peasant world that characterized the Upper valley of the Dora river between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

In Faure's work, we find described the fieldwork, the tools, the life of a community in its daily evolution, the folk traditions, beliefs, superstitions, religious rituals with their syncretisms, and sometimes we cannot help but smile at the naivety of the characters that reflects the simplicity and cruelty of that harsh peasant world, but at the same time, we cannot help but be moved and sometimes touched by the description of that rural landscape, that Arcadia so skillfully evoked and described as experienced firsthand by the author. These are the words of Renato Sibille who edited the reissue and gave new life to the work with his comments, a rich glossary of less common, antiquated, obsolete words, dialects, or particular meanings given by Faure, and the complete biography of Professor Faure reconstructed through the documents consulted in the historical archives of the Municipalities of Oulx and Sauze d'Oulx, the joint school college of Oulx, the Parish of San Giovanni Battista of Sauze d'Oulx, and the Diocese of Susa, in addition to information drawn from local periodicals of the time and various publications.

Atti del convegno, tenuto in occasione del duecentesimo anniversario del Trattato di Utrecht e del sessantesimo anniversario del Consorzio Forestale Alta Valle di Susa.

Il cahier n.25, pubblicato nel 2016 nel ventennale della collana dei Quaderni dell'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean, è dedicato a un luogo simbolo per l'Ecomuseo: L'Hotel Dieu.

L'antico luogo di accoglienza di pellegrini, poveri e bisognosi, acquistato dall'Ente Parco del Gran Bosco di Salbertrand nel 2011, si prefigge di ritornare a essere, dopo più di duecento anni, punto di riferimento per la Comunità, il Territorio, i Pellegrini, i Turisti e i Viaggiatori lungo i moderni itinerari spirituali ed escursionistici.

Dal 2013 al 2015, grazie a fondi dell'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean e a fondi assegnati con due bandi GAL Escartons e Valli Valdesi, sono stati eseguiti con successo i primi interventi di manutenzione straordinaria/recupero/riqualificazione/restauro parziale del sito dell'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean.

Il cahier è completamente dedicato alla storia secolare dell'Hotel Dieu e agli interventi di recupero degli ultimi anni che, oltre a mettere in sicurezza l'immobile e a donare l'antico splendore alla facciata  che si affaccia sulla via principale e sulla fontana cinquecentesca (la cui storia, dalla costruzione al restauro, va di pari passo con quella dello storico edificio), hanno riportato alla luce preziosi affreschi cinquecenteschi.

Souramìa, Courombiera e l'Outanhë. Territorio, storia e toponimi dell'ex comune censuario di Solomiac

Questo nuovo Cahier sull'ex Comune censuario di Solomiac, dal 1929 divenuto frazione di Cesana Torinese, si struttura con una prima parte storica che traccia un identikit della comunità tra il 1700 e il 1900 e una seconda parte con approfondimenti relativi all'amministrazione dei beni comuni da cui emerge una forma di democrazia che va molto oltre quella odierna. Lo statuto comunale prevedeva che ogni anno, a rotazione, fosse nominato un sindaco proveniente da una delle tre frazioni, così che tutte potessero essere rappresentate democraticamente. Altri capitoli sono dedicati ai notabili, all'istruzione e alla vita religiosa della comunità. L'ultima parte è dedicata agli itinerari e ai toponimi.

Il cahier rappresenta la continuazione ideale di quello dedicato a Desèrtes poichè i due ex Comuni, oltre ad avere i territori limitrofi ed entrambi ai confini dell'ex Mandamento di Cesana sulla linea di separazione da quello di Oulx, hanno condiviso e condividono la loro storia: dalle antiche origini, alla soppressione avvenuta nel 1928 in epoca fascista, fino all'abbandono e a un seppur timido ritorno.

La Certosa di Montebenedetto (Villar Focchiardo) esempio di certosa "primitiva"

A Salbertrand il clima favorevole, la disponibilità di acqua e l'arrivo della ferrovia che permetteva l'arrivo di semilavorati da posti molto lontani hanno permesso l'investimento in industrie varie tra cui quella della lavorazione del merluzzo che arrivava salato dai mari del nord e veniva lavato ed essiccato per la vendita sul mercato nazionale integrando le economie autarchiche dei contadini del paese e delle borgate. Oreste Rey ne descrive e illustra la lavorazione e Virgilio Faure, già direttore dello stabilimento la storia.

La caccia al selvatico nella tradizione contadina dell'Alta Valle di Susa

Il nuovo lavoro di ricerca e restituzione culturale presentato dal Consorzio Forestale Alta Valle Susa e dall’Ecomuseo Colombano Romean, raccoglie, nelle varianti occitane locali, aneddoti sulla caccia, usanze relative alla vendita e alla concia delle pelli, leggende riguardanti i selvatici e ricette tradizionali con la cacciagione. Presenta un glossario essenziale dei termini in occitano relativi all'attività venatoria, i nomi dei selvatici nella parlata locale, i proverbi e i toponimi dell'Alta Dora relativi alla caccia e ai selvatici. Contiene un capitolo dedicato alla letteratura occitana del cacciatore altovalsusino e agli scritti del poeta ulciense Ernesto Odiard des Ambrois, appassionato cacciatore di inizio Novecento; e uno dedicato alla storia della caccia nell'Alta Dora e alle vicende riguardanti la scomparsa o il ripopolamento dei selvatici. Integrano la ricerca un contributo di Roberto Musso dedicato al Comprensorio Alpino di caccia CATO 2 e un intervento di Romano Nuvolone che racconta la caccia a Melezet (frazione di Bardonecchia) ieri e oggi. Nel cahier sono inoltre pubblicate numerose fotografie d'epoca.

Gli abitanti della foresta sono attenti ad ogni novità. Al posto e nel nome del grande larice abbattuto, Oreste Rey e i bambini della scuola elementare di Salbertrand piantano un giovane larice. Il futuro è nelle mani del presente. La foresta e chi la popola leggono in questo avvenimento un messaggio per le giovani generazioni di ogni specie. 
 

Dopo una carrellata sui Carnevali alpini con i loro riti propiziatori per la bella stagione, l'autrice ricostruisce le particolarità del Carnevale di Salbertrand. Dopo un ultimo gran Carnevale nel '46, lo spopolamento del paese e l'attrattiva della vita cittadina portano quasi all'estinzione la festa che si rinnova a partire dagli anni Settanta con una nuova veste. Il Testamento del Carnevale in chiusura è resoconto ironico di quanto accaduto nell'anno passato e un eredità da passare al giovane Carnevale per l'anno futuro.

La pubblicazione è arricchita da un contenuto multimediale allegato.

La storia degli uomini che hanno abitato la Val Troncea si è mischiata a quella delle rocce che l'hanno formata con la scommessa di guadagnare da vivere dal rame dei minerali racchiusi nella montagna.
Gente abituata a sforzi enormi si è infilata sotto terra a forza di pala e picco, compiendo opere degne di giganti per estrarre e trasportare a valle il minerale, lavorando a quote proibitive per la sopravvivenza.
Il libro racconta dall'inizio alla fine questa storia, accelerata dalla valanga del Beth, con cui la montagna ha detto la sua.

Cave e miniere dell'Alta Valle della Dora

Il Cahier n. 27 è opera di Renato Sibille e rappresenta la seconda parte della ricerca mineraria e mineralogica in Alta Valle di Susa. Grazie a una accurata ricerca di archivio approfondisce gli aspetti dello sfruttamento minerario in Alta Valle dalle ricerche e coltivazioni precedenti l'Ottocento, allo sfruttamento tra Ottocento e inizio Novecento, fino alle coltivazioni di minerali ferrosi degli anni Trenta-Cinquanta del Novecento favorite dalla situazione economica creatasi all'indomani del blocco imposto all'Italia dalla Società delle Nazioni e dalle esigenze dell'industria bellica prima e automobilistica poi.

Il lavoro va ad approfondire quanto introdotto dal cahier precedente e a trattare l'aspetto sociale e economico dell'attività di sfruttamento delle risorse del territorio, con particolare riguardo alle miniere della Fiat di Valle Stretta e Salbertrand (Seguret e Himbert), alle cave del gesso di Signols e della Baume e al "Marmo verde Alpi" di Cesana. Al termine del Cahier le conclusioni e la cartografia a cura di Zeno Vangelista ci illustrano gli aspetti prettamente geologici.

 "La disponibilità degli archivi familiari di Ferruccio Rey, il cui padre Edoardo fu il responsabile del cantiere Fiat del Banchet in Valle Stretta e poi di quello di Traversella, ci ha permesso di far rivivere gli anni dell'autarchia, la sua durezza nella vita di un paese comunque povero dove i minatori vivevano in condizioni limite, oggi immaginabili solo nei paesi del terzo mondo. Altra vera chicca di questa pubblicazione è rappresentata dai documenti messi a disposizione dalla famiglia Pozzallo relativi alle cave e alla fabbrica del gesso di Signols con planimetrie, progetti e disegni introvabili e tecnicamente invidiabili ancora oggi".

Un cahier dedicato alle carbonaie vuol essere un contributo alla riscoperta ed alla memoria di una forma di cultura materiale un tempo diffusa in tutte le Alpi e gli Appennini.
Il testo spazia dalle origini delle carbonaie, alle leggende ad esse associate, ricco di immagini, è stato illustrato dai ragazzi della scuola elementare di Salbertrand.
Approfondisce le varie fasi di realizzazione di una carbonaia: i camini, le aire, la legna utilizzata, l'accensione e l'alimentazione, i tempi della carbonaia, la raccolta, il trasporto, gli strumenti del carbonaio, l'uso del carbone, l'emigrazione... e molto altro ancora.

Perchè Chateau? Credo che la molla che mi ha spinto a sostenere un cahier dedicato a questa Comunità sia stata la visita alla mostra fotografica sulla figura di don Riccardo Perron Cabus attraverso le bellissime fotografie d'epoca di Paolo Bressano, questa primavera. In quell'occasione ho avuto modo di apprezzare l'impegno di Rita e di Ines per salvaguardare la memoria collettiva di quella borgata che, come in tante altre realtà frazionali dell'occitana Alta Val Dora, si sta lentamente spegnendo. Un impegno quotidiano di ricerca, di presenza e di lavoro silenzioso sostenuto da un orgoglioso senso di appartenenza, dedicato con amore al proprio paese e al ricordo di chi ci ha preceduto.
Anche la figura di don Riccardo, che ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere e avere come amico, mi ha stimolato molto sia per le sue scelte resistenziali, sia per il suo essere parroco senza remore nel calarsi nella realtà quotidiana dei suoi parrocchiani e nel saperli affiancare nelle difficoltà e, perché no, anche nella manualità del lavoro e nelle passioni.

Così con Chateau siamo giunti al Cahier n°30 dell'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean di Salbertrand, un traguardo all'inizio impensabile che, con l'aiuto di tanti, ha invece permesso in questi anni di salvare tanti tasselli di storia e cultura locale, sicuramente di dimensione minore ma, proprio per questo, più vicina al cuore di tanti di noi.
Infine, in quest'occasione, desidero ringraziare Giovanni Bressano, Rita Frezet, Ines Chalier, Giovanni Borio, Ivo Chalier, Gianfranco Bernard, Angelo Bonnet, Andrea Zonato, Renato Sibille, tutti i volontari dell'Associazione Chateau e tutti coloro che ci hanno permesso di meglio conoscere la soria di questa Comunità, della sua gente e della sua lingua nella quale si apprezzano i caratteri di una fiera autonomia parrocchiale e una spiccata volontà di autogestione del suo territorio.

Storia della reintroduzione dello Stambecco in Val Troncea con inquadratura iniziale su origine della specie, biologia e periodo buio dell'estinzione.  Fotografie e cartine tematiche chiariscono il testo e rendono conto dell'affetto degli autori per il progetto e per il territorio.
Il lavoro di squadra all'interno del Parco e nelle aree confinanti di successiva reintroduzione è uno dei tasselli del successo del ritorno dello stambecco sull'arco alpino che si consolida di anno in anno, con l'estendersi di una continuità territoriale tra nuclei inizialmente separati.

Progetti, memorie e disegni inediti custoditi negli archivi militari di Vincennes, comune francese ubicato nella parte orientale di Parigi, trovano nuova luce e permettono di ricostruire uno scenario del territorio, della seconda metà del 1600, davvero inaspettato che avrebbe potuto definire un'altra storia e disegnare altri luoghi, molto diversi da quelli che conosciamo.
Pubblicare questo prezioso tassello di storia come quaderno dell'Ecomuseo significa restituirlo e rivolgerlo in primis alle comunità dell'Alta Valle affinchè possano appropriarsi di una visione più ampia delle vicende che hanno coinvolto i loro antenati. Dinamiche tra popoli, strategie e poteri, sistemi difensivi da adottare e questioni economiche da gestire sono intrecciati e riportati con la stessa precisione e cura con cui l'intelligente Vauban redigeva progetti militari per il Re di Francia Luigi XIV. E' la sua figura, da noi poco conosciuta, ma ben nota oltralpe, che ci guida e svela idee e studi per una miglior difesa di Cesana e di Monginevro seguiti da ben più importanti progetti di realizzazione di nuove fortificazioni a Oulx e Bardonecchia, di adeguamenti a Exilles e molto altro.

Scialli, foulard, copricapi e grembiuli negli abiti della festa e in quelli di uso quotidiano definiscono ogni valle per il modo in cui sono cuciti o abbinati, caratterizzati da segni distintivi a seconda dei momenti della vita.
Molti dei tessuti e nastri venivano da Oltralpe e raccontano di stagioni dure in cui le famiglie erano divise per lavori stagionali.

La ricerca su cui si basa il Quaderno del Parco n°2 della val Troncea ha ancora molto da approfondire e lascia il seme di un progetto di produzione di nastri di seta tradizionali ormai introvabili.

Il Rio Rocciamelone precipita a valle, passando dal deserto nivale a un ambiente mediterraneo tagliando il calcare in una profonda fessura, dove trovano rifugio piante e animali tipici di posti lontani, testimoni viventi di epoche in cui il clima ha modellato il paesaggio che vediamo ora, dove tracce di pellegrinaggio e incisioni rupestri risalenti al neolitico raccontano storie di antichi abitanti.
Gli itinerari descritti sono la scusa per trattare con diversi piani di lettura i segni sul territorio che sale intorno alle rupi di Foresto.

Il libro è diviso in due parti: la prima riguarda gli strumenti legislativi che regolano i diversi ambiti della vita contadina, la seconda presenta quali esempi pratici i regolamenti campestri di Pragelato, Usseaux e Fenestrelle.

Clelia Baccon ha raccolto testimonianze di persone partite, tornate o andate in visita dai parenti d'oltremare e dà un'inquadratura generale dell'emigrazione da Salbertrand e dalle sue borgate costellata di aneddoti.
Virgilio Faure entra nel vivo, raccontando l'esperienza dell' emigrazione in Francia della sua famiglia e oltremare dei suoi parenti.
Insieme sviluppano il tema dell'emigrazione lasciando traccia di quella speranza nel partire di trovare un mondo migliore dove dare un futuro alla propria famiglia.
Il paragone con flussi migratori di gente con lingue e tradizioni diverse che rivivono oggi esperienze simili può dare spunto per immedesimarsi con coloro che stanno arrivando e cercare soluzioni di convivenza nel rispetto di tutti.

La pubblicazione di questo cahier, resa possibile da un contributo del Ce.S.Do.Me.O., Centro Studi e Documentazione della Memoria Orale di Giaglione, garantisce la salvaguardia della memoria toponomastica di un'ulteriore porzione del vasto territorio di Oulx: quell'area più prossima ai confini di Salbertrand ed in parte protetta dal Parco naturale del Gran Bosco, che corrisponde alle frazioni di Gad, Monfol, Baume, Auberges.
Grazie alla insostituibile memoria e collaborazione di numerosi informatori sono stati raccolti circa 570 toponimi, documentazioni storiche e scientifiche, aneddoti e preziose immagini d'epoca, confluiti in questo nuovo, significativo prodotto dell'Ecomuseo Colombano Romean, "...capace di far rivivere generazioni passate di frazionisti che, con fatiche oggi inimmaginabili, han saputo positivamente antropizzare, ambientalmente ed anche culturalmente, questi angoli di valle fino al secondo dopoguerra...".

Un'oasi di mediterraneo in Valle di Susa

Invito ad avventurarsi sui sentieri dell'orrido di Chianocco per sognare il mare all'ombra dei piccoli lecci tipici della flora mediterranea, arroccati su questi aridi pendii; per scoprire sul territorio le tracce della potenza dell'acqua e tra borgate, canali e briglie quelle dell'ingegno con cui gli abitanti se ne sono difesi o ne hanno tratto beneficio.

Gli alberi sono una presenza viva intorno a noi, creature multiformi con una storia spesso avventurosa, pronte a svelarla a quanti sanno mettersi in ascolto... Intorno a questi alberi la gente si è raccolta per secoli e secoli, costruendo riti e tradizioni che ancora oggi sono portati avanti dalla collettività dell'Alta Valle di Susa.  Gli alberi del maggio, Pouento, Chirintèl, Chantè, Ran, che affondano le radici in tradizioni millenarie, hanno riunito intorno a loro la comunità in una celebrazione della vita, perpetuata nel rito della fertilità e della rinascita. Per lo più assimilati nei festeggiamenti delle feste patronali, con l'avvento del Cristianesimo, gli alberi del maggio sono simbolo della celebrazione vitale della comunità.

Isolate nei pressi di frazioni disabitate, anomime in mezzo ai paesi dell’Alta Valle, coperte di neve in inverno o circondate da animali al pascolo in estate, ci sono mura che custodiscono cicli pittorici dai colori vivaci dove i volti dei personaggi delle storie sacre hanno tratti caratteristici di persone dell’Alta Valle e gli oggetti che arredano gli spazi in cui si muovono documentano la vita quotidiana di persone reali.

Descrizione della Via dei Pellegrini, itinerario costruito rispondendo alle domande sul territorio introdotte nel primo capitolo con il dialogo tra due personaggi inventati: un Guida che risponde alla domande di un Pellegrino.
I temi principali sono approfonditi singolarmente nei capitoli seguenti e nel percorso fotografico.

In the heart of the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Park, facing a large panorama with the Gran Hoche, the Vallonetto, and the Seguret. The refuge is a stop on the Via Alpina, the GTA, and the Glorious Return of the Waldensians.

Structure rebuilt on the ruins of an old typical house, located in the heart of the Val Troncea Natural Park. It houses a large dining room and on the two upper floors we find the rooms, for a total of 40 beds.

The Toesca Alpine Refuge is located in the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Park, in Pian Del Roc in Val Susa.

L'alpeggio Costa Rossa di Mompantero montica con bovini di razza pezzata rossa austriaca, piemontese ed incroci e caprini.

Produce tipo toma fresca e stagionata, lait brusch, primo sale, ricotta, tometta alle erbe, peperoncino e ginepro, burro, tomette fresche e stagionate di capra, ricotta di capra e primosale caprino.

At the beginning of the 1900s, some traders from Oulx, united in a company, built the Salbertrand ice house, near the Rio Gorge, to conserve the ice produced in winter in the adjacent artificial lake.

The chapel has a monumental fresco of Saint Christopher and an Annunciation (1533) on the outside, while inside the entire apse area houses a rare pictorial cycle entirely dedicated to scenes from the life of the Virgin, dated 1534.

The refuge is open every weekend from Friday morning to Monday afternoon, and by reservation also during the week, for lunch or dinner, for small organized groups, and from mid-June to mid-September we are open every day.

The ancient mill bears witness to 800 years of history of water exploitation, from the feudal milling rights to the birth of the Salbertrand Municipal Electricity Company.

The San Moritio (San Maurizio) fort was built starting in 1628 at the Colle della Roussa to counter any French offensive attacks through the pass, which at the time marked the border between the Dauphiné and Piedmont. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it is one of the very few examples of star fortification present in a mountain environment.

Nel caseificio di alpeggio si produce da fine giugno a settembre: quadrato del Colle, blu erborinato del Colle, tipo toma alle erbe, tipo robiola, ricotta, tomini, burro.

Il rifugio sorge sui ruderi dell'Alpeggio della Balma, una costruzione pastorale preesistente. Tra il 1977 ed il 1985, i volontari della sezione di Coazze del CAI provvidero a restaurare la costruzione, che era pericolante; il nuovo rifugio fu inaugurato nel 1985, in occasione del ventennale della sezione.

L'alpeggio è gestito dall'Azienda Agricola Gulli Manuel di Mattie che montica con bovini delle razze Valdostana e Pustertaler. Nel caseificio di alpeggio si produce da giugno a settembre: tipo toma, toma del lait brusc. Come raggiungere l'alpeggio: da Mattie percorrere circa 20 minuti di strada sterrata. L'alpeggio è gestito dall'Azienda Agricola De Michelis eredi di Ciriè che montica con bovini di razza Pustertaler. Nel caseificio di alpeggio si produce da fine giugno a settembre: tipo toma fresca e stagionata, toma del lait brusc, bruss al pepe, al peperoncino ed alle erbe. Come raggiungere l'alpeggio: da Gravere SP 254 in direzione frazione Frais di Chiomonte, poi proseguire su strada sterrata fino ad Alpe Arguel

L'alpeggio si trova nel complesso monumentale della Certosa di Montebenedetto ed è gestito dall'Azienda Agricola Giovale Manuel di Borgone Susa, che montica con bovini di razza Pustertaler e incroci. Nel caseificio di alpeggio si produce da maggio ad ottobre: tipo toma fresca e stagionata con origano e con peperoncino, toma del lait brusc, gelato, latte, burro. Come raggiungere l'alpeggio: da Villar Focchiardo percorrere per circa 30 minuti di strada parzialmente asfaltata

Alpeggio comunale, è gestito dall’Azienda Agricola Canton Mario di Usseaux che montica con bovini di razza Pustertaler, incroci e pecore di razza Bergamasca. E’ stato dotato dal Parco di mungitrice mobile sperimentale d’alpeggio Alpina 4. Nel caseificio di Usseaux si produce con latte delle mungiture del pascolo da metà giugno a fine settembre: tipo toma fresca e stagionata, tomette alle erbe provenzali, tomette al peperoncino. Come raggiungere il pascolo: da Usseaux percorrere circa 40 minuti di strada asfaltata.

Alpeggio comunale, è gestito dall’Azienda Agricola Challier Alex di Usseaux che montica con bovini di razza Pustertaler, incroci e di razza Valdostana Pezzata Nera. Nel caseificio di Usseaux si produce con il latte delle mungiture del pascolo da metà giugno a fine settembre: tipo toma fresca e stagionata, erborinati, tomette ginepro, tomette peperoncino, bruss, ricotta fresca e stagionata, tomini, burro. Come raggiungere il pascolo: da Usseaux percorrere circa 30 minuti di strada asfaltata.

The Rifugio Il Truc stands at an altitude of 1706 m in the Rocciamelone SCI, on an exceptional and airy panoramic balcony overlooking the mountains and the valley floor of the Susa Valley.

Overnight stay in a mountain hut surrounded by nature

The refuge, according to tradition, was built on the place where Bonifacio Rotario d'Asti, who was the first to climb the summit of Rocciamelone in 1358, had built a shelter.
In 1419 the building would then be restored by order of Amedeo VIII of Savoy. There has been a chapel on the site since 1798. In 1974 the refuge was renovated.

Along the dirt road that leads to the Selleries refuge, 1 km before the refuge (or 10' on foot), you pass near the Jouglard bergeria.
One of the huts present, owned by the Municipality of Roure, renovated by the Orsiera Rocciavrè Natural Park, has been equipped with a wood stove, tables and benches.
