In 2022, two park rangers from the Protected Areas of the Cottian Alps participated in a monitoring conducted in Aosta Valley as part of the international project GLobal Observation Research Initiative in Alpine environments (GLORIA) to measure the interaction between alpine flora and climate change. After a complex process of data reprocessing, the results of the fieldwork conducted under the guidance of ARPA Aosta Valley were published, with contributions from the Department of Life Sciences and Biological Systems (DBIOS) of the University of Turin and the Mont Avic Natural Park. 

The mountainous areas are among the most valuable and fragile biodiversity hotspots globally, hosting unique species adapted to harsh climatic conditions and extreme environments. However, a recent study conducted along an altitude gradient in the Western Alps highlights how protected areas, while essential for the conservation of mountain fauna, are facing increasing pressures related to climate change and land use changes, which have repercussions on mountain biodiversity.

Interreg-ALCOTRA Project “ACLIMO” - Drops of Change: eight experiences of sustainable water management in agriculture and livestock: a series of eight videos that tells some of the numerous experiences of sustainable water management in agriculture and livestock that have emerged in the area thanks to the commitment of operators in dialogue with institutions, and that deserve to be shared and promoted.

ACLIMO aims to provide concrete support to the territory towards a sustainable transition of human activities, in particular pastoral ones, for the conservation of the natural heritage, through an ever-increasing knowledge of the effects of climate change on the habitats and species most vulnerable to availability of water.

An activity to learn about the biology of a species symbolic of the Alps, also thanks to the technological innovations put in place by science, and reflect together on the climate changes that are undermining its conservation.
