Recipients

  • Primary school
  • Lower secondary school

Objectives

  • To understand the evolution of fish.
  • To promote awareness and respect for biodiversity and the importance of freshwater ecosystems.
  • To raise students' awareness of the importance of conserving the plant and animal species living in a lake by observing the differences between alien and native species, with particular reference to fish.

The LIFE Predator Project works to combat the spread of the Wels catfish, an alien and invasive species.

As part of the Project, some funds from the European Community have been allocated for raising awareness among adults and young people about the impact of species introduced by humans on natural environments.

Description

The fish fauna
Starting from the appearance of fish, we will follow their evolution up to today's fish, and then address the topic of invasive species and the Life Predator project, with particular reference to the Wels catfish.

Methodology

Two hours of classroom lessons.
Excursion to Lake Piccolo in Avigliana to discover the environment in which the catfish has settled.
A easy walk along the shores of Lake Piccolo will allow us to grasp
the key features of this particular habitat. We will talk about the fish that
populate it and the threats they face, then we will engage in an educational activity involving drawing and imagination to hypothesize the future evolution.
A game will allow us to get moving and understand how the catfish influences local fish populations.

Recommended period

It is possible to carry out the activity in all seasons.

Duration

Meeting in class for 2 consecutive hours
Field trip for the entire day
